Safari: 7/15/2011

Friday: “We are really on an African Safari.”
We left at about 5:00 a.m. and headed to the wild game park—we reached it at about 9:00 I believe, and got on top of yoda (the land cruiser) for the drive around the park. We saw lots and lots of animals. We were hoping to see a lion, but no such luck; however we did see lots of babboons, monkeys, giraffes, elephants, and capped-buffalo. There were also many “antelope-esque” animals. Taylor and I really liked the hartebeasts—they look like their face ran smack into the side of a tree because it is so flat (they bound everywhere and look so funny).
Today was a day just to soak in the beauty of Uganda. We kept having to remind ourselves that we were truly on a normal African Safari. I love the verse in Romans that talks about how the wonder of creation points us to the Creator. I kept thinking that over and over again throughout the morning.
"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."
--Romans 1:20

The hotel was very extravagant—far too much really. We really didn’t know what to do with ourselves there. But we were able to enjoy a gorgeous view of the Nile river from the hotel restaurant porch (Down below, there were gorgeous hippo pools). I also got a wonderful hot shower!! Though I was a bit sun-burned so it was more of a warm/cool shower. Either way, it was glorious!

(We saw lots and lots of Elephants.)
(I called these Water Buffalo all day, but found out they are actually "Capped-Buffalo")
(Taylor and I got addicted to riding on top of Yoda--looking for those Lions.)
(The Girls beside the Hippo Pool.)
Taylor and I stayed up talking in our living room for quite a while that night. Towards the end of our talk we started hearing these loud noises outside our cabin. We joked that maybe it was a lion. We were scurrying around from window to window trying to discover what animal(s) were making such loud noises. We were a bit frightened because our doors were pretty much just glass. We laughed a lot and finally saw the culprits: a family of hippos crossed right beside our yard. We could see their silhouettes in the light. After that excitement we decided it was time to head to bed.
(Giraffes may have been my favorite animal to see, besides the Hartebeasts.)

(We stopped at a Giraffe watering pool and were surrounded by about 25 all at once.)
(We sang lots of "The Lion King" songs...but whenever we saw Elephants I heard the song from the Jungle Book. :)
